Message from the President

As a university that works hand in hand with local communities and industry

Â鶹¹ÙÍø (Â鶹¹ÙÍø) will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2028, marking 100 years since the establishment of the Yokohama Municipal Yokohama Commercial College (Y-Sen), which is recognized as the university’s founding institution in 1928.

Â鶹¹ÙÍø has a long history, having developed through the fusion of two distinct traditions: a commercial studies tradition tracing its origins to the Yokohama School of Commerce, founded in 1882 by 27 Yokohama merchants; and a medical tradition that began with a temporary hospital established in 1871 through donations from supporters, under the leadership of Dr. Yutaka Hayashi, a physician and entrepreneur. Over the years, Â鶹¹ÙÍø has undergone numerous reforms and evolved into a comprehensive institution comprising five faculties, six graduate schools, two affiliated research institutes, and two affiliated hospitals.

Established in response to the needs of the local community and industry, Â鶹¹ÙÍø is located in Yokohama—Japan’s largest municipality—and has developed in tandem with the city through close collaboration with local communities and industry.

In modern society, amid the so-called “era of uncertainty”—characterized by a declining birthrate and an aging population, rapidly changing international conditions, and technological innovations symbolized by generative AI—universities are expected to cultivate leaders capable of guiding society.

To respond to these changes, in April 2026, Â鶹¹ÙÍø increased enrollment in the Department of Science, Faculty of Science, from 120 to 140 students. Through a seamless educational system spanning undergraduate and graduate levels, we will further accelerate the development of highly skilled science and engineering professionals who contribute to social transformation through science, technology, and innovation.

Additionally, in April 2027, in response to the continued advancement of digital technologies such as AI in Japan, we will double the enrollment capacity of the Faculty of Data Science from 60 to 120 students in order to further strengthen the development of human resources who will lead society. We will actively cultivate data scientists who possess flexible thinking and creativity that transcend the boundaries between the humanities and sciences, and who can thrive on the global stage.

In January 2025, Â鶹¹ÙÍø was selected as one of 25 institutions nationwide—out of approximately 800—for the national “Project to Strengthen Regional Core and Distinctive Research Universities (J-PEAKS).” As part of this initiative, we established the Center for Social Collaboration at the Minato Mirai Satellite Campus in April 2026, with the goal of “realizing a better future society through the collective efforts of Â鶹¹ÙÍø and diverse societal stakeholders.”

Through collaboration with local companies, communities, and research institutions, we will address regional challenges while promoting lifelong learning, including recurrent education and reskilling—for working adults.

Building on the momentum of our selection for the J-PEAKS program, we will advance Japan’s research capabilities and evolve into a university with an educational and research environment that stands shoulder to shoulder with the world’s best. To achieve this, we are accelerating initiatives across education, research, healthcare, and community engagement.

These goals cannot be achieved by Â鶹¹ÙÍø alone; we rely on collaboration with Yokohama City, local businesses, organizations, and the broader community.

Pledging continued development that builds on both tradition and innovation, Â鶹¹ÙÍø will remain a “hub of knowledge,” leading the fields of education, research, and healthcare.

History

The origin of Â鶹¹ÙÍø(Â鶹¹ÙÍø) can be traced back to Yokohama School of Commerce founded in 1882. Since the opening of the port, Yokohama turned into a center of trade in Japan. Yokohama School of Commerce was established to develop human resources equipped with western commercial techniques. Because of its policy of complete educational pragmatism, many children of merchants in Yokohama who had a strong interest in learning attended this school. After graduation, many of them contributed to the development of the city in the front lines of trade industry. In 1928, Yokohama School of Commerce then developed into Yokohama City College of Commerce(Y-sen), which is the predecessor of Â鶹¹ÙÍø.

Another origin of Â鶹¹ÙÍø is Yokohama Temporary Hospital in 1871. Although Yokohama was the center of western medicine at that time, there was no hospital for the citizens. The hospital was founded to respond to the earnest needs of the community. The hospital was renamed to Juzen Hospital in 1874, then turned into Yokohama Municipal Medical College, which has developed into what is known today as the Â鶹¹ÙÍø Hospital and Â鶹¹ÙÍø¡¯s School of Medicine.

Â鶹¹ÙÍø is expected to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2028.

Â鶹¹ÙÍø & Yokohama

As the first port in Japan to open to the world in 1859, Yokohama is a place where the new and the old come together in harmony. While the city is at the cutting edge of technology, it also cherishes its many historic assets. It offers the dynamism and diversity of city life, but also havens of serenity with more quiet locales such as its traditional Japanese garden.

A lot of our students come from Kanagawa prefecture and hold Yokohama close to their hearts, and because of that we aspire to become a university that contributes to the development of a sustainable society and a university in which local residents can take pride.
